Scheme Introduction

The National Virtual Industry Placement Scheme, also known as myVIP, is an online resource developed for use in Schools. The scheme aims to bridge the gap between static career information and the unobtainable ideal of one-on-one careers mentoring. myVIP provides students with knowledge and experiences directly from the workplace to help them make informed decisions about their future and develop essential employability and life skills. It also features a range of online tools and resources to support Schools in the delivery of Work Related Learning and Enterprise Education across the curriculum.

How does myVIP work?

MyVIP has a growing database of placements, provided by real people doing real jobs within a range of UK Businesses. The placements range from Builders and Welders, to Barristers and Managing Directors. Each placement is interviewed by telephone by one of the myVIP team. They are asked questions about their job role and working practices. The information obtained from the interview is written up into a Job-Diary. The monthly diaries provide an insight into the career, covering topics like; skills used, challenges faced, training and qualifications required, health and safety, working environment, career progression and financial aspects.

The learner’s experience of myVIP is based around the scheme’s website www.myvip.co.uk.  Learners can log on to the website using their email address and unique password. This can be done from any computer with Internet access i.e. in the classroom, at home or at their local careers centre.

The website allows the learners to browse a list of Placements to identify job roles and Industries that they would like to explore and look at in detail. The placements can be searched by a number of criteria i.e. Job Role, Company, Industry or Subject. Each placement provides:

  • A Job Description containing generic information about that Job Role i.e. main duties, annual wage bands, expected hours of work, qualifications and skills required.
  • An introduction to the individual or organisation that have helped the scheme by providing the information and insights on which the Job-Diaries are based.
  • The Job-Diary entries previously generated for that placement.
  • A CareerClip showcase video is available for many of the placements.
  • An audio option for each new and archived job diary. Enabling students with reading difficulties and the visually impaired to hear the job diaries read to them.

What other resources does myVIP have to offer?

At the heart of myVIP are the placements and monthly Job-Diaries. In addition to this core service the website offers a range of resources, learning tools and information to support careers, Work Related Learning and Enterprise Education. Material and features available via the site include:

  • myVIP Industry Exhibition – Top-level information about 50 UK Industries for learners to explore. Each section contains an overview of the Industry Sector, statistics for employment and turnover, key players and details of Industry bodies and organisations.
  • Resources and Fun – A lighter look at careers and progressing into the world of work. This area contains both original material and links to existing resources including; a Career Path game, an Interview Technique game, tips on writing a CV, application form tips and more.

  • CareerClips – A video overview of the job role, working practices and working environment with a narrative providing top-level job information, advice on career progression and key statistics.
  • MyMenu -  A number of useful features for students and staff to manage your profile, store favourites and access other information via the myDesk page.
